PORT ROYAL
The last thing Rick Lafferty wanted to see Saturday night at Port Royal
Speedway was a late race caution.
And it happened on lap 19.
Although Lafferty wasn’t thrilled to see the yellow lights, the Pennington,
New Jersey driver was still able to keep Lance Dewease and Todd Shaffer at
bay during the final six laps to capture his first win of the season in the
25-lap 410 Sprint car feature.
While many cars were sidelined with blown tires during the event, Lafferty
worked the dry dusty surface to perfection for his third career win at the
track.
“When I saw that last caution there with six laps to go and I saw Lance was
behind me, I thought I’m gonna be in trouble,” said the driver of the
Clugston Lumber, Glenn Harry Auctioneer sponsored No. 0 JEI chassis. “I knew
I just had to keep ‘er still and go as fast I can could go.”
Dewease applied pressure but Lafferty had his sprinter working perfectly
through the middle of the track.
“It was weird tonight and the center of the track was fast and I just
happened to find it early and was able to stay out front,” he added. “It’s a
lot easier being up front that’s for sure.”
Lafferty jumped out front over Cale Grubb when Judi Bates blew a tire on
lap five to bring out a yellow.
Greg Hodnett, who started fifth moved into third the runner-up spot on lap
six and was poised to make a run at Lafferty but Hodnett’s terrible luck at
Port Royal continued when the J & S Fabrication sprinter blew a right rear
tire with 10 laps complete.
This turned the runner-up spot back to teenager Grubb while Dewease, who
started 12th moved into the third spot.
Dewease, who was scheduled to race with the World of Outlaws in Ohio this
weekend but stayed local because of weather conditions, took second from
Grubb off the second turn on lap 18 and Shaffer, who started 11th moved into
third a lap later just when Jason Shultz’s night ended with apparent motor
woes on lap 19.
It was all Lafferty over the final laps as Dewease searched for the groove
to make the winning pass but settled for a close second at the checkered
flag in the Donny and Lisa Owens owned sprinter.
“We struggled last year a lot and at the beginning of this year, thing’s
weren’t looking so good either,” Lafferty said after earning $2,700 for the
win. “We sat down and went over what we used to do back a couple years ago
and they seem to be working.”
Lafferty went on to state that his sponsors are what keep his sprint car on
the circuit each week.
“Without Clugston and Glenn Harry, this program probably wouldn’t happen,”
said the landscaper by trade.
Shaffer, the Port Royal points leader finished third in Gary and Patty
Beam’s sprint with Grubb, of New Enterprise holding on for a career best
finish in fourth spot ahead of Berwick’s Alan Cole.
Completing the top 10 were Todd Hestor, Dave Hahn, Bill Brian, Jr., Cliff
Brian and Mike Wagner, who was running fourth on the final lap when his tire
went flat.
Heats for the 23 sprints were won by Grubb and Hodnett.
Dan Stone captured his second win of the year in the 20-lap late model
main.
Port Royal returns to action next Saturday with another program of 410
Sprints, late models and pro stocks joined by the Super Sportsman tour.
