Shepard Takes Another $5G Victory

PORT ROYAL
Jeff Shepard is beginning to like $5,000 to win races.

For the second straight week, Shepard piloted the Zemco Speed Equipment sprinter to victory.

This time, the win came in Saturday night’s 30-lap O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions Bob Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway. It backed up his convincing win a week ago in the Weldon Sterner Memorial at the Lincoln Speedway.

Shepard used a top six feature inversion to his advantage to start on the front row of the feature and led wire to wire for his third overall win this season.

“It always helps to start on the front row,” said the Upperco, Maryland veteran following his seventh career Port Royal win. “Starting position was everything tonight, We might not have had the fastest car, but we brought it here first and that’s what counts. This is a brand new Maxim with a brand new Rider Racing Engine.”

Shepard outgunned Keith Kauffman to grab the lead at the start with Kauffman settling into the second spot.

Todd Shaffer lined up sixth in the Beam Racing sprinter and showed strength early, taking the second spot from Kauffman on lap eight and setting his sights on the leader.

Shaffer began to cut into Shepard’s lead when the yellow was displayed on lap 13 for a flat tire on the Mark Smith machine.

Another quick yellow for All Star regular Brian Ellenberger brought out a yellow a lap later and a fuel stop was required.

Under the red, it was discovered that Shaffer’s sprinter had a broken left front shock and he would not be able to contend for the win during the latter stages of the race.

“I could hear somebody right on my tail before the red and I knew I wasn’t real fast,” he said of a fast-closing Shaffer before the red flag. “I couldn’t keep my front tires on the track and you gotta figure you’re going to get passed. Unfortuntely for him, he had a left front shock problem and that could have been from the track tonight because it was a little rough. He would have been tough to beat. It just worked out for us tonight.”

Lance Dewease, running for the 2008 All Star championship started eighth and took second from Shaffer on lap 23 but was unable to mount a challenge for the lead. But with his runner-up finish, Dewease was able to pad his current points lead with the series after points runner-up Dale Blaney went to the pits before  one lap was completed.

Greg Hodnett started ninth and made a late race charge into the third spot with Shaffer ending up fourth ahead of Kauffman.

Rounding out the top 10 finishers were Brian Paulus, Sean Michael, Mark Smith, Alan Cole and Mike Wagner.

Paul McMahan paced the 32-car field during time trials with a lap of 16.110 seconds.

Heats were won by Ellenberger, Dewease, Dave Hahn and Cliff Brian.  Steve Buckwalter won the B-Main while Hodnett won the Dash.

Nine All Star teams were on hand for the show, which was run in memory of the late car owner Weikert, who fielded one of the top sprint cars in the country for many seasons.
