Leppo Earns Second Keystone Cup Win

SELINSGROVE
It was hard for Brian Leppo to hold back the emotions Sunday night at Selinsgrove Speedway after winning the 30-lap Keystone Cup Sprint Series event.

For one, the win marked the first ever for Leppo at the Snyder County oval after having a near win get away from him a year ago during the same event when he suffered a late race flat tire.

But most importantly, Leppo’s win was for one of his car owners, Joyce Swope, who is in the hospital battling heart problems.

“I’d like to dedicate this to my car owners wife Joyce,” said an emotional Leppo after winning his second Keystone Cup race of the weekend. “She’s not doing well right now and Floyd was supposed to come tonight but he didn’t. We are all praying for her so hopefully this win will help Floyd and Joyce.”

Leppo’s third win of the season in the Swope Salvage and Recycling No. 71 JEI chassis came in front of a standing room only crowd on a beautiful night in Selinsgrove.

By virtue of setting the second quick time trial lap and a four car inversion for the feature, Leppo lined up alongside Sean Michael and led the field to the green flag.

But it was Michael, aboard the Jim Nace owned sprinter grabbing the early lead with Leppo settling into second over Cody Darrah.

Leppo blew by Michael off the fourth turn to lead lap seven and began to distance himself from the field when Darrah disposed of Michael on the 11th lap.

Leppo was in heavy lapped traffic on lap 13 when Matt Horst brought out a yellow flag.

On the restart, fifth-starting Fred Rahmer got around Darrah for the runner-up spot as Leppo was out front and gone on the restart.

Rahmer tried to track down Leppo, who was setting a blistering pace around the big half mile.

But Leppo maintained a near three second advantage when Rahmer’s tire blew on lap 25 to bring out a yellow flag.

Darrah was no challenge to Leppo over the final five laps as he went onto score the big win and gaining some valuable points towards the Keystone Cup championship.

“We’ve been fast and I owe it all to Barry Jackson for making this thing so good,” Leppo added. “He knows how to win at this place and he had it dialed in tonight. We were fast Friday at Williams Grove and had a good car last night until we got caught up in a crash. My crew puts in a lot of long hours working on this thing so we can come do this and I owe it all to them and to my car owners for putting me in the best equipment out there. It feels really good to win, especially at a place you’ve never won at before.”

Leppo’s margin of victory over Darrah was 1. 4 seconds.

Darrah of Red Lion was second over Michael, of Coplay, Harrisburg’s Chad Layton and Elizabethville’s Mike Erdley.

Completing the top 10 finishers were Todd Shaffer, Jeff Shepard, Todd Hestor, Rick Lafferty and Mark Smith.

Stevie Smith paced the 38-car field during time trials with a lap of 16.929 seconds but mechanical problems in both his heat and B-Main forced Smith to watch the feature from the pits.

Heats were won by Lafferty, Erdley, TJ Stutts and Keith Kauffman. The B-Main was won by Shepard.

The  second annual Keystone Cup concludes tonight at the Port Royal Speedway with a 5pm scheduled start.
