It was only
fitting that Frankie Herr and Carmen Perigo, Jr. came out on top of Twin
20’s for Super Sportsman Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
Herr, the three-time defending Sportsman champion had went winless all
season long and Perigo won the 2009 Sportsman championship despite never
reaching victory lane.
Both ended their season in victory lane with their first wins of the season
in the season finale at the Grove as Gene Knaub, Kory Sites and Kevin Thomas
also joined in the Friday night win celebrations.
Herr started the night out on the front row of the first 20 lap feature but
he didn’t take control on the eighth lap when race leader Leroy Martin
relinquished the lead to the Carlisle driver.
Herr was never seriously challenged in taking his 11th career track win to
become the 16th different winner in Sportsman competition this season.
Martin finished in second over Jason Fry, Newville’s Russ Mitten, up from
12th starting spot and Ryan Rupp with Scott Dellinger, Gregg Foster, Perigo,
Chad Criswell and Bobby Hockenberry the top 10 finishers.
In the second feature, Perigo started in the eighth spot and won the
feature in spectacular fashion with a final lap pass on Rupp for the win.
Perigo took second from Fry on lap 17 and then used a final lap, final turn
pass on Rupp for his first win with the Walt Bigler owned team.
Rupp, Fry, Dellinger and Mitten were the top five trailed by Herr, Martin,
Foster, Rich Eichelberger and Paul Miller.
Gene Knaub recorded his 11th overall win of the season as he topped the
20-lap topless 358 late model feature.
Knaub, the 2009 track champion, started on the pole and led the entire
distance in an easy win over Bobby Beard, Ron Little, Sr., Bernie Beard and
Mike Walls with Travis Mease, Shaun Jones, Derrike Zirkle, DJ Mease and Kyle
Lear the top 10 finishers.
Mechanicsburg’s Kory Sites captured his eighth win of the season in the
street stock feature winning over Joey Hoffer, Doug Hoffman, Pat McNeal and
Craig Morgan.
Kevin Thomas came out on top of the double 4-cylinder features but it was
Brian Wentzel winning the 2009 track championship for the division.
Thomas won a makeup feature over Wentzel, Ed Hollenbach, Henry Lesher and
Dennis Christ, Jr. while he defeated Wentzel, Hollenbach, Ronnie Buck and
Nick Ruhl in the second feature.
Williams Grove will honors its 2009 championship teams on November 14th at
its annual banquet at the Radisson Penn Harris in Camp Hill.
