Nobody asked me but…
What a week Stevie Smith and the Zemco team had during Keystone
Cup. Smith proved he is still one of the best to ever wheel a
race car with some thrilling wins and his first ever Cup title.
New blood is always good.
Speaking of the Zemco team, it stinks for Pennsylvania that the
team isn’t a full time deal anymore. But they are fresh and
always at the front so who can blame them for taking some time
off to regroup. It’s amazing that Smith is a close second in
Grove points despite missing some races and ranks third in the
Speed Dawg. He’s definitely the real deal this year.
It amazes me that some teams chose not to support the Keystone
Cup with its extra purse and time trial format. How many times
have we heard about how unfair the handicapping rules are and
tracks need to pay more money, etc., but when they do, some
teams don’t support them? Makes no sense to me.
Even more disheartening is how many teams race Virginia Motor
Speedway on Saturday night, some of which don’t even race when
the Outlaws are local? I guess the incentives to show up were
good even though none of the finishes were very impressive.
All I’ve heard and read recently is how horrible Lincoln
Speedway’s surface is and how awful the racing is per the fans.
But what I saw there on Saturday night surely didn’t support any
of those statements. I do believe it was one of the best races
I’ve seen anywhere in a long time, as are most races in the
Pigeon Hills.
It’s good to see Cody Darrah getting back on track with a very
impressive Lincoln win Saturday night. Unfortunately for Cody, a
second win in the makeup was nullified when Chad Trout brought
out the caution after he took the lead. Cody got outmuscled by
Fred Rahmer on the restart and had to settle for third but had
it not been for the caution, it was a Darrah sweep.
We wish Pat Cannon much luck in his future sprint car racing.
Cannon has proven in the past several years that he can wheel a
sprint car but in my opinion, he wasn’t given a fair chance this
year for many reasons. Cannon will return to the Highlands team,
a team he was very successful with.
And Daryn Pittman will probably do well in the Keen Motorsports
car given the right personnel on the car. It will be interesting
to see if Pittman gets the team to hit the road fulltime in 2010
if things click.
And of course this leaves the Pete Postupack car vacant, kinda
like it was before the season started when Pittman came looking
for a ride. Hopefully the car can remain on the track with a
good driver on board.
Congrats to Lucas Wolfe on his Indy Lights deal for 2010. We
know it’s what Lucas wanted and certainly hope he can find
success at it. He just moved into the top 10 on the World of
Outlaws points.
It’s a shame Chad Layton can’t get a full-time gig in a 410
Sprint car and race more often. In the handful of times he’s
raced the 410 this season, he has been very fast and up front.
But as of now, it appears the Jimmy Layton owned team will
continue to concentrate on the URC circuit and make the three
and four hour tows each weekend to race.
Congratulations to Fred Rahmer on his National Sprint Car Hall
of Fame induction this Saturday in Knoxville, Iowa. He joins
quite an elite group of drivers that have made it into the HoF.
WHATS HAPPENING
It’s back to regular racing this weekend on the 410 Sprint car
tour with Friday night action at Williams Grove and Saturday
night at Lincoln and Port Royal Speedway’s.
The 358 sprint cars are back in action at Williams Grove on
Friday, Trail-Way on Friday and Lincoln and Selinsgrove on
Saturday while the Super Sportsman are back for another Saturday
Night Series event at Williams Grove joined by the 358 late

sportsman. The super late models also have shows scheduled at
Bedford, Port Royal and Selinsgrove.
There will be all sorts of stock car action at Susquehanna but
the 358 late models get the night off this week. Lincoln
Speedway will present a big Fireworks display.
Don’t forget the USAC Sprints will make their appearance in the
