ABBOTTSTOWN
Danny Dietrich has been knocking on the door all season at Lincoln Speedway during his rookie season in a 410 Sprint car.

The young Aspers driver  has had several top five finishes in an underfunded team and Saturday night, he held off a hard charging Cody Darrah over the final five laps to capture his first ever win in a 410 Sprint car.

Dietrich’s first win came in the 25-lap Daryl Gohn/Glenn Gohn, Sr. Memorial at the track. It was worth $3,600.

“The car was good and Fred watered the track which made it really great,” said Dietrich, who fell seven points shy of a 358 Sprint car championship at Lincoln several years ago.

The race got off to a wild start when Johnny Mackison, Cory Haas, Fred Rahmer, Josh Wells, Brian Montieth and Jim Siegel tangled in turn four. Mackison’s car got stuck in the guide wires while Rahmer got upside down.

Chris  Knopp jumped out front on the start as Dietrich, who started sixth moved into second on lap three.

Dietrich and Knopp made contact on the seventh lap, breaking the front axle on Knopp’s car to bring out a caution.

“I thought I had him cleared,” said Dietrich about the incident. “It was my fault and I hope he’s not made at me but these days racing with these guys, you can’t waste any time.”

While Dietrich was setting sail out front, Montieth was once again putting on the show of the night, blasting around the top of the track after restarting at the rear of the field.

Montieth was up to eighth on the caution and then moved up to fifth a few laps later. But that’s as far as he would advance.

Darrah, last week’s winner was on the move after starting 12th.

He took fifth on lap 11 and then drove from fifth to third during the 15th lap.

Darrah drove by Cris Eash for the runenr-up spot on lap 17 and quickly closed in on Dietrich, who held a three-second advantage.

Darrah showed Dietrich his nose on lap 21 and that was all it took for Dietrich to move the Racer’s Used Parts Warehouse No. 88 to the bottom of the speedway.

“I started getting tight on the top coming off the corners,” he said. “I got my wing back a little too far and I couldn’t move it back forward. I saw Cody got into second and one lap he got under me in one and two and I thought as tight as I was up top I better get to the bottom and get in hard and shut it down and maybe make him wash up and lose some ground.”

Dietrich’s move worked as Darrah, of Red Lion was unable to challenge and settled for second.

Eash of Hanover was third with teenager Aaron Ott, of York Springs fourth over Montieth, of Phoenixville.

Completing the top 10 were Ed Aiken, Alan Krimes, Adam Wilt, Justin Henderson and Mark Smith.

Adrian Shaffer captured his sixth career 358 Sprint car win with a win in the 20-lap feature over Jeff Rohrbaugh, John Barnett, Brad McClelland and Ricky Stonebraker.

Heats for the 32 410 Sprints were won by Aiken, Niki Young, Ott and Dietrich with Wells winning the consolation.

Lincoln returns to action next Saturday night with opening night of the 19th annual Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek featuring the Sprint cars in the $7,000 to win Kevin Gobrecht Memorial.
