Johnny Mackison held off challenges from Brian Montieth before winning at Lincoln.

ABBOTTSTOWN
It’s been a long time since Johnny Mackison, Jr. won a feature at Lincoln Speedway.

It was September 2, 2000 to be exact.

Mackison ended that long dry spell with an impressive win in Saturday night’s 25-lap 410 Sprint car feature at Lincoln.

Mackison took the lead on lap seven and then had to drive by Brian Montieth, who pulled a final lap slide job in turn two before scoring the popular victory for his family owned team.

“That was exciting,” said Mackison, who owns the B & B  Metal Refinishing No. 65 sprinter. “We’ve struggled for a few years putting this deal together so it’s nice to be here.
We’ve been getting closer but had some mechanical issues with some of the used parts we were running. We’ve replaced them and this thing is going pretty good now. I enjoy racing here and I’m just glad to be here.”

Mackison’s win came in a non stop event however, two red flags slowed action before a lap could be completed.

On the initial start, Bill Stine flipped in turn one collecting Scott Geesey, Jeff Busby and John Rudisill.

On the next start, Doug Dodson got into Aaron Ott in turn one with Ott getting upside down.

Pat Cooper grabbed the early lead as Mackison, who started seventh moved into second on lap three.

Montieth, who started 11th was on the move early, moving into the top five by lap four.

Mackison drove under Cooper in turn three to take the lead on lap seven as Jim Siegel moved by Cooper two laps later for second.

Mackison caught the rear of the field on lap 13 as Montieth drove by Siegel for second place on lap 14.

Montieth, looking for the win on a night sponsored by his car owner Premier Auto Works and sponsor Auto Locator hounded Mackison over the final 10 laps before trying the slider on the final lap.

Mackison was able to drive back under Montieth and held on for the win, his fifth career win in the Pigeon Hills.

“I’d like to say we planned that,” Mackison joked about the final lap pass. “Brian’s been real fast all year and I always tell my guys, when an opportunity presents itself, we’ll take advantage of it. I’m glad it was a good race for the fans.”

Mackison, of York,  said he is building his sprint car team for his sons, John and Jordan.

“I’m building this team to run more for my boys,” he added. “We run go karts every Friday so this is all we can race right now. But this deal will be for them when it’s time for them to start racing. They maintain this car all week long and I can’t ask for much more.”

Montieth, of Phoenixville, Siegel of New Oxford, Danny Dietrich of Aspers and East Berlin’s Niki Young completed the top five finisher with Josh Wells, Cody Darrah, Cory Haas, Cooper and Fred Rahmer the top 10 finishers.

Lewisberry’s Kyle Moody was the 20-lap 358 Sprint car feature over Austin Reed, Eric Tomecek, Bill Dietrich and Jeff Rohrbaugh with Logan Shuchart, Mike Ressler, Gerard McIntyre, Jr., Glenndon Forsythe and Tim Wagaman. The win was his first career win at Lincoln but his second this season after an earlier win at Williams Grove Speedway.
Heats for the 27 410 Sprints were won by Mackison,  Ott and Dodson while Rahmer won the consolation.

Mike Ressler, Matt Boland, Bill Dietrich and Kyle Moody were heat winners for the 35 358 Sprints on hand. Amy Ott won the consolation that took 40 minutes to complete.

Lincoln returns to action Wednesday night with the fifth night of the inaugural Appalachian Mountain Late Model Speedweek series. Racing begins Wednesday night at 7pm.

The track will then return next Saturday night with the 57th Anniversary show sanctioned by the All Star Circuit of Champions, paying $5,700 to win. The thundercars are also on the card beginning at 7pm.
