Hodnett Clinches Speedweek Title With Port Royal Win

PORT ROYAL
Greg Hodnett won’t have to worry about points entering Sunday night’s Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek finale at Selinsgrove Speedway.

Hodnett, of Thomasville led all 30 laps of Saturday night’s Speedweek event at Port Royal Speedway and in the process clinched the 2009 Speedweek championship with one race remaining.

Hodnett, who has two runner-ups, a third and two fourths this week, finally had some luck go his way in his first win of the week at the Port.

Despite setting quick time during three of the shows, Hodnett drew six and eight feature inverts that hindered his chances of winning more races.

But Saturday, when quick timer Stevie Smith drew a six for feature inversion, Hodnett knew he had to take advantage of it. He was sixth quick time in time trials.

“Starting position meant so much tonight and we were able to take advantage and finally win one of these,” he said after his 17th career Speedweek win. “We’ve been good all week but just couldn’t really catch any breaks so we’ll take this one tonight and go on to Selinsgrove.”

And he can go to Selinsgrove and just race.

Following the Port Royal event, Hodnett has 928 points compared to runner-up Cody Darrah’s 729. A perfect night during Speedweek is worth 195 points. Third in Speedweek points entering Selinsgrove is Daryn Pittman (720) followed by Mark Smith (695) and Chad Layton (685).

Hodnett was challenged by Darrah on lap 11 of the feature when he was having trouble putting T.J. Wine Gardner a lap down. Hodnett then had some trouble getting around Bob Bennett to put him a lap down but Darrah was unable to make up any ground during the late laps.

Doug Dodson flipped on lap two for the only red flag of the event.

Brian Leppo, running in the top five, suffered a flat tire on lap 24 to close the field on Hodnett.

But he was up to the challenge as he drove to the $5,000 win aboard the Jim and Sandy Kline owned, Macri Concrete No. 22 Maxim. It was his fifth overall win of the season, this third this year at the Port and 14th of his career at Port Royal.

“We’re probably one of the only cars that didn’t have any real bad luck all week and that’s what you need to do to win the points deal,” said Hodnett, who won the Speedweek title back in 2002. “The team put a lot of hours in this week so it’s nice to be able to come out on top of the point deal. We’ll go to Selinsgrove and hopefully end the week with another win.”

Darrah, of Red Lion was second over Owasso, Oklahoma’s Pittman, Harrionsville’s Mike Wagner and Elizabethville’s Mike Erdley.

Completing the top 10 were Garry Brazier, Chad Kemenah, Fred Rahmer, Mark Smith and Todd Shaffer.

 S. Smith’s fast lap in time trials was 16. 604 seconds. Unfortunately the steering broke on the Zemco sprinter during the heat race causing Smith to flip hard. He was out for the night.

Rahmer, Kemenah and Shaffer won heats for the 30-cars while Dodson won the B-Main.

Selinsgrove Speedway will bring an end to the 19th annual Speedweek series tonight.
