SELINSGROVE
Chad Kemenah enjoyed his first ever Pennsylvania Sprint
Speedweek.
The Findlay, Ohio driver was hired to drive the Dawn and
Charlie Sorokach owned No. 35 sprinter for the series and he
quickly produced, giving the team two wins during the week and a
fifth place ranking in the final Speedweek point series.
Kemenah’s second win came in the series finale Sunday night at
Selinsgrove Speedway, where he took the lead on lap 23 and never
looked back.
“The only one that slipped away from me was Williams Grove,”
said the former All Star and World of Outlaws regular. “I was
really hoping to get one there. But I’m not gonna complain. Two
wins out here in the toughest part of the country. I’m starting
to like Pennsylvania. We’ll take the two wins and head back to
Ohio.”
Kemenah, who set quick time during time trials with a lap of
17.470 seconds, started fourth in the 30-lap Jan Opperman
Memorial and settled in behind front row starter Brian Leppo
during the early laps.
While Leppo was setting the pace, 2009 Speedweek champion Greg
Hodnett was making noise, blasting from his 14th starting spot
into the top five by the seventh lap.
Trevor Lewis, about the Jim Nace owned sprinter took second
place from Kemenah on the ninth lap and stayed there until lap
19 when Kemenah went back around for the runner-up spot.
Kemenah immediately closed on Leppo, whose sprinter developed a
tire going flat during the late stages of the race.
Kemenah got around Leppo on lap 23 as Lewis followed into the
runner-up spot a lap later.
Hodnett got by Leppo for third place on lap 26.
Kemenah narrowly missed a flipping David Gravel on the final
lap, which brought out a red flag.
“We barely avoided him,” Kemenah said of the Gravel car. “We
had a good restart and my guys told me to make one good lap.
Barry Jackson and the guys build a really nice race car. It’s
the first time I ever drove a JEI and we didn’t really touch it
all night long. That’s the sign of a good race car.”
Kemenah stated that he will continue driving the Sorokach owned
sprinter for the remainder of the season.
“I can’t thank Dawn and Charlie enough for bringing me out
here,” he said. “It’s been a blast. We will definitely be back
in the 35 car for the rest of the year as much as we can and
maybe can drag them out west a little bit too.”
Upper Black Eddy’s Lewis had his best finish since taking over
the Nace owned car with a second place finish with Hodnett, of
Thomasville third, Lancaster’s Doug Esh fourth and Leppo, of New
Oxford fifth.
Completing the top 10 were Mark Smith, Todd Shaffer, Daryn
Pittman, Garry Brazier and Mike Erdley.
Heats for the 26-cars were won by Chad Layton, Hodnett and
Rahmer with Blane Heimbach topping the B-Main.
Hodnett ended the week with 1,062 points for his second career
Speedweek championship in the J & S Fabrication sprinter.
Pittman ended up second in Speedweek points with 823 followed by
Mark Smith (822), Layton (770), Kemenah (730), Cody Darrah
(729), Esh (683), Rahmer (612), Stevie Smith (581) and Erdley
(528).
