It was all Greg Hodnett in Saturday night’s 42nd annual Tuscarora 50
for Sprints at Port Royal Speedway.
In an event lined up by pill draws, Hodnett and the Jim and Sandy Kline
owned team took full advantage of a great pill draw as Hodnett won his
heat race, then won the dash and then dominated the 50 lap event,
leading from flag to flag for his third career win in the event.
“We had great starting positions all night long,” said the Thomasville
driver who earned $12,750 for his fifth win of the season at the Port
and 16th career track win. “The car was flawless. I couldn’t for
anything better.”
While Hodnett set the pace out front, lots of action behind him kept
things interesting as many drivers suffered flat tires during the event
calling for an early red flag for a fuel stop on lap 18.
A hard crash involving Kevin Nouse and Kerry Madsen, driving for Jim
Nace brought out a red flag on lap 15. No drivers were injured.
Daryn Pittman ran in the second spot for much of the race before ninth
starting Stevie Smith took the spot on lap 36 and tried to close in on
Hodnett but could not make a challenge for the win.
“I am very fortunate to be standing up here,” said Hodnett after his
area leading ninth overall win of the season in the J & S Fabrication,
Macri Concrete, Eastern Air Balance, Rockit Pizza No. 22 Maxim. “The
guys did a great job, there was a lot of positioning involved with that
and we’ll take it. Jim and Sandy give me the best equipment they can.
They put together a great team.”
Smith, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma was second with Pittman, of Owasso,
Oklahoma third in the Keen Motosports owned sprinter. Fourth went to
Harrisburg’s Chad Layton over Salfordville’s Fred Rahmer, who changed a
tire on lap 18.
Completing the top 10 were Mark Smith, Port champion Todd Shaffer,
Brian Montieth, Don Kreitz, Jr. and Lance Dewease.
Heats for the 42-car field were won by Keith Kauffman, Pittman, Hodnett
and Shaffer with Madsen and Dave Ely winning the twin consolations.
Hodnett won the dash.
Track champion Scott Haus gave his car owners their final win as he
took the win in the 20-lap late model feature.
Haus’ longtime car owners, Beech Creek Racing are retiring this season
following many successful seasons as late model car owners and Haus sent
them out as winners with his eighth overall win this season.
Jeff Rine, Mike Hess, Tim Wilson and Mitch Hack were the top five
finishers.
WINTERS WINS HUB CITY
McConnellsburg’s Marvin Winters added his name to the long list of
winners in the Hub City Nationals at Hagerstown Speedway.
Piloting the Tex Shaffer owned No. 46, Winters led all 50 laps for the
$5,000 prize, his second win of the season but his first ever in one of
the biggest races of the season at the Maryland oval.
Winters drew the number one starting spot for the feature and made good
of that spot as he maintained the lead despite numerous cautions during
the event.
Dan Stone raced home in the runner-up spot over Ronnie DeHaven, Jr.,
Frankie Plessinger and Al Shawver, Jr. with Gary Stuhler, JT Spence, Jim
Yoder, Mike Walls and Billy Wampler the top 10 finishers.
For the fourth time this season, Martinsburg, WV’s Chad Criswell came
out on top of Super Sportsman Tour action.
Criswell started sixth in the 50 lap event and used lapped traffic with
two laps remaining to take the lead from Jason Fry and scored the $2,000
top prize. Criswell leads all drivers with wins this season in his first
year driving for car owner Danny Miller.
Fry finished second with Dillsburg’s Rich Eichelberger third,
Newville’s Russ Mitten fourth and points leader Carmen Perigo, Jr. fifth
in the Walt Bigler owned machine. Completing the top 10 were Ryan Rupp,
Jay Fannasy, Eric Eckert, Danny Hager and Doug Hendricks.
WEEKEND RAIN
Friday night racing across the midstate was rained out as Port Royal,
Williams Grove, Trail-Way and Path Valley Speedway’s all had to cancel
racing programs.
Pockets of rain in the area on Saturday also forced Selinsgrove,
Susquehanna and Trail-Way Speedway to cancel while Lincoln Speedway
tried to open but drizzle hit the track after gates opened and forced
the track to cancel. Lincoln will reschedule the 358 Sprint championship
at a later date.
With Selinsgrove’s rainout, Halifax driver Nate Snyder won his first
career 358 Sprint car championship with Jeff Rine (late models), Jason
Smith (pro stocks) and Marlin Dunham (roadrunners) also claiming track
titles.
Grantville’s Dale Hammaker clinched his first career 358 Sprint car
title at Lincoln Speedway.
