It was a big night for Daryn Pittman Friday at Williams Grove Speedway.

After building a brand new Maxim chassis for competition this week, the Owasso, Oklahoma driver won two of the three 20 lap features at the track Friday night.

With Greg Hodnett winning the first feature of the Jack Gunn Triple 20’s, Pittman stormed back to win the second and third earning $7,500 for his two feature wins. The wins were his fifth and sixth overall on the season, most of them coming aboard the Jesse Keen Motorsports No. 17.

Hodnett and Lance Dewease sat on the front row of the first feature but officials deemed Hodnett jumped the start and moved them back a row.

Brian Leppo then led the first two laps before giving way to Don Kreitz, Jr.

Kreitz, who set fast time over the 30-car field led until lap 12 when Hodnett, of Thomasville drove under him in turn four to grab the top spot.

Hodnett then had to battle with heavy lapped traffic over the final five laps as Kreitz was right there waiting for his change to regain the lead.

“We were having some trouble getting through lapped traffic and we definitely have to get better the rest of the night,” said Hodnett, whose fourth win of the season at the track moved him on top for the season. “I guess I jumped the start and they put me back a row but we had a good car and the guys did a good job.”

Hodnett’s eighth overall win this season in the Jim and Sandy Kline owned car moved him into a tie for sixth place on the all-time Williams Grove win list with 41. He needs just two wins to move into the top five.

Kreitz, Leppo, Todd Shaffer and Mark Smith were the top five with Dewease, Brian Montieth, Alan Krimes, Aaron Ott and Daryn Pittman the top 10.

With a 10-car invert for the second 20 lap feature, Pittman jumped into the lead at the start and held the spot over Montieth, who was ready to take the lead on lap 11 when the red flag appeared for Brent Marks, who flipped out over the fourth turn guardrail. Marks was making his first start in the John Trone owned sprinter, subbing for injured Doug Esh.

With a clear race track, Pittman kept his sprinter out front through the remaining laps as Montieth nearly stole the lead on the final lap but settled for the runner-up finish.

“That was a Brian Montieth race track tonight,” said Pittman, after his second Grove win of the season and fifth overall. “I don’t think we had the fastest race car tonight but Brian raced me clean. I’m just glad it didn’t pay more than $2,500 because he could have used me up in three and four. He’s a good racer and I’m just glad it wasn’t 21 laps tonight.”

Pittman took the checkered flag over Montieth, Dewease, Smith and Ott with Fred Rahmer, Krimes, Hodnett, Kreitz and Cody Darrah the top 10 finishers.

Pittman started fifth in the third feature and took the lead from Mark Smith late in the race for the big win.

The race was red flagged on lap sixth when Layton got out of shape on the backstretch and was hit hard by Chris Meleason. Neither driver was injured.

Pittman’s win came over Smith, Montieth, Hodnett, Rahmer, Darrah, Dewease, Shaffer, Kevin Nouse and Leppo.

Kreitz’s one lap time was 16.759 seconds. The two heats were won by Rahmer and Mike Erdley.
