Daryn Pittman used every inch of the racing surface at Hagerstown Speedway
during Thursday night’s Keystone Cup 410 Sprint Series event.
The end result was the Owasso, Oklahoma racer driving by race-long leader
Brian Leppo with seven laps to go and holding on for his first win of the
season.
Pittman’s first Keystone Cup win also came with his new team owned by Mike
Heffner.
“Mike’s not here tonight but I told him we were gonna win one this week,”
said Pittman, who started the season in the Keen Motorsports car. “This
car’s just too good not to win and it’s great to be in victory lane and with
a new team. It’s a lot of fun getting behind the wheel of a car that’s
capable of winning every night.”
The race went non stop following a red flag before one lap was completed.
Justin Henderson spun in turn four and collected Michael Heckman, who
flipped.
Leppo assumed command at the green flag as fourth-starting Pittman moved
into the runner-up spot by the completion of the first lap.
Leppo caught the rear of the field by the ninth lap and Pittman was racing
just five car lengths behind the New Oxford racer.
But Leppo was able to get through traffic with relative ease, keeping
Pittman at bay until lap 23, when Pittman drove under Leppo in turn two.
“I knew from the start we were gonna have the car to beat tonight but you
put Leppo out front and he’s gonna be fast,” said Pittman, who earned $5,000
for his first Keystone Cup win. “I kept thinking if we could get into lapped
traffic, I had something for him but he got through the traffic better than
I did. But I just took advantage of him being out front and not knowing what
was going on behind him. It’s better to be in second sometime.”
Leppo stayed with Pittman over the final laps but was unable to get back
around and settled for the runner-up spot.
Pittman set a new 30-lap track record with a time of 9:01.25.
Denver’s Alan Krimes finished a close third over Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s
Stevie Smith and Salfordville’s Fred Rahmer.
Danny Dietrich finished sixth over Mark Smith, Brent Marks, Tyler Walker
and Greg Hodnett.
Leppo paced the 27-car field during time trials with a lap of 15.412
seconds.
Heats were won by Walker, Pittman and Dietrich with Hodnett winning the
consolation.
WALKER WINS GRANDVIEW
The fourth annual Keystone Cup for 410 Sprints cars kicked off Wednesday
night at Grandview Speedway where it was Los Angeles, California driver
Tyler Walker scoring the 35-lap feature win.
Walker, who recently started driving for the Carlisle-based Keen
Motorsports team destroyed a car during time trials but the team brought a
new car and the rest is history as Walker drove to his first ever Keystone
cup series win.
Walker made a late race move on leader Greg Hodnett to take control of the
event and drove off for the $5,000 payday.
Hodnett finished second over Lance Dewease, Fred Rahmer and Daryn Pittman.
Pittman set fast time in time trials with a lap of 11.889 seconds. Only 22
cars were on hand for the series opening event.
