It’s not too often a race car driver would be happy to finish in the runner-up spot.

But Daryn Pittman said he would have been happy to finish second to Brian Montieth Saturday night at Lincoln Speedway.

But Pittman came out on top of a wild 30-lap feature after a race long battle with Montieth and earned his first career win at Lincoln in the Keystone Cup 410 Sprint Series main.

The win was also the second straight win during the Keystone Cup, after winning Thursday at Hagerstown Speedway.

“I’m terrible here,” said the Owasso, Oklahoma racer after earning the $5,500 payday in front a large Saturday night crowd. “This is a race track that honestly out of the whole week, was probably our weakest link. We’ve just never been that good here.”

Pittman led lap one before giving the top spot up to Montieth, the two time defending track champion.

Montieth held the point through lap nine when the yellow flag flew for Sam Schlosberg.

Montieth kept Pittman at bay over the next several laps and held a two second advantage over Pittman at the halfway point of the race.

But lapped traffic played a vital role in the final 10 laps of the race as Pittman drove by Montieth for the lead with 18 laps complete as Aaron Ott also moved into contention.

While Ott and Montieth traded slide jobs on laps 23 and 24, Pittman was out front and headed to his first ever win but after clearing Ott, Montieth made a late race charge and fell just a car length short at the checkered flag.

“We started on the pole and you’re always happy to start there but at a track you don’t feel you’re very good at, you’re like I can only go backwards,” said the driver of the Heffner Racing Enterprises sprinter. “When Montieth got by me, I don’t usually like to run second, and no disrespect to Fred (Rahmer), but I feel Montieth is one of the best around here right now. He could have used me up but he raced me clean and I was gonna be happy to finish second to him tonight. So I’m just speechless.”

Montieth, of Phoenixville finished second ahead of Ott, of East Berlin, Tyler Walker of Los Angeles, California and Fayetteville’s Lance Dewease.

Completing the top 10 were Alan Krimes, Greg Hodnett, Fred Rahmer, Brian Leppo and Adam Wilt.

Krimes paced the 37-car field during time trials with a lap of 13.349 seconds.

Heat races were won by Pittman, Doug Esh, Walker and Montieth while Wilt won the B-Main.

Following the third night of Keystone Cup, Pittman leads the points with 463 over Walker (399), Krimes (377), Leppo (355) and Rahmer (349).

Keystone Cup continues tonight at Selinsgrove Speedway and concludes Monday at Port Royal Speedway.

Ben Murphy, now living in Mooresville, NC won the 1000cc Sidewinders feature.
