MECHANICSBURG
Last season Greg Hodnett won three times against the World of Outlaws
at Williams Grove Speedway.
Friday night was the “Outlaw tuneup” at the Grove and after a wild
finish, Hodnett was standing in victory lane for the first time this
season after capturing the 30-lap feature event.
It was a wild turn of events during the final laps as the race leader
Stevie Smith along with runner-up Chad Layton both ran low on fuel with
two laps remaining as Hodnett drove by to take the white flag.
After Hodnett took the white flag, the yellow flag appeared and was
quickly replaced by a red flag for a fuel stop.
Hodnett assumed the lead as Smith and Layton were able to rejoin the
field in the second and third spots.
“We caught a big break tonight,” said Hodnett, who earned $4,000 for
his third overall win this season for car owners Jim and Sandy Kline.
“We were scheduled to start seventh but then a few guys didn’t qualify
and that moved us up to third. Then everybody started running out of
fuel and we were able to capitalize on their misfortunes. You need to
put yourself into position to be able to win races.”
Hodnett, of Thomasville, fell as far back as fifth spot during the
race, which Layton led the first 21 laps before giving way to Stevie
Smith.
Hodnett’s win was his 43rd career Williams Grove win, moving him into a
fifth place tie on the all time track win list with Lynn Paxton. Hodnett
also moved back on top of the Lawrence Chevrolet Sprint Car point
standings.
Hodnett isn’t sure if he or any of the Pennsylvania Posse are ready for
next week’s invasion by the Outlaws.
“I don’t know,” said Hodnett about next week. “If you look at how
everyone did in Florida, the results weren’t really that good. It’s
gonna be tough, and it will be a tough track and a tough field of cars
just like there are every week here. You gotta put yourself into
position to be there at the end.”
Smith finished second over Layton, 17th starting Lance Dewease, Brian
Montieth, Rick Lafferty, Ryan Bohlke, David Gravel, Doug Esh and Brian
Leppo.
Camp Hill's Nicole Bower led flag to flag to become the first female
to win a sprint car event at Williams Grove as she won the 358
Sprint car feature.
Bower, who just finished her freshman year at the Delaware State
University scored the win over Rich Eichelberger, Cory Haas, Pat
Cannon and Glenndon Forsythe.
Layton set fast time over the 28-car field with a lap of 17.019 and
heats were won by Leppo, Todd Shaffer and Esh with Gravel winning the
B-Main.
