"The Brickmobile" Set To Return To Central PA In 07

By Brad Vores February 8, 2007

When the 2007 racing season kicks off at Williams Grove Speedway in two weeks, a familiar car will be making a return to the famed half mile.

After five years away from the sport, Walt Dyer’s “Brickmobile” will be back in the lineups with a rookie driver. The last time the Dyer Masonry sprinter competed in Pennsylvania was during the 2001 racing season.

Winchester, Virginia’s Tommy Beavers will be the latest driver to pilot one of the most famous sprint cars in the history of sprint car racing. Beavers, 26 is a three year veteran of 305 Sprint car racing and won the 2005 Path Valley Speedway championship. He is married to Dyer’s grand daughter Sarah.

“Oh my gosh, it’s huge, it’s a dream come true,” said Beavers with his southern accent. “My goal in racing was to always race a sprint car in Central Pennsylvania and I never thought I’d probably be able to race one let alone in Bud’s car. I look at the names and the history in that car and it’s just amazing.”

Dyer took Beavers by surprise about a month ago after returning from his vacation home in Florida.

“Walter went to Florida about a month ago and he came home and said he was buying me a 410 motor and we were going racing,” said Beavers, who planned on another season in the 305 sprint car. “He’s had the itch for some time to get back into racing so we’re just going to race one night a week because there is no way he could go back to the schedule he had before.”

The team will concentrate on racing events at Williams Grove.

Dyer is giving Beavers plenty of time to get familiar with his new office.

“Bud said I didn’t have to win the first race but I had to win the second one,” he joked. “Our main goal is to go out there and get laps, we need them more than anything. We’d like to get some decent finishes by the end of the season.”

While it will be a no pressure deal, Beavers thinks differently.

“It’s a huge deal for me but it’s a really huge deal for the racing community to have this car back on the circuit,” he mentioned. “It’s gonna cause a lot of hype and it will only be added pressure on me because of the hype that surrounds this car.”

Beavers said the old Dyer crew will return along with the car owners for another go round. Alan Northcraft, Larry Younker and Donnie Timmons are all looking forward to returning to the track with their young gun.

They always say racing is in your blood. No doubt about it, the return of the Dyer No. 461 to the track about sums that up.
