BECHTELSVILLE
Fans who left with a few laps
remaining in Wednesday night’s World
of Outlaw feature at Grandview
Speedway missed a dandy of a finish.
Donny Schatz and Danny Lasoski
traded the lead over the final two
laps with Lasoski edging out Schatz
by .036 seconds in the 35-lap
feature to kick off the Dupont Tyvek
Keystone Cup Sprint Series at the
Bechtelsville oval.
It was so close that Schatz
actually thought he won the race.
It was the final appearance by the
World of Outlaws in the area until
mid July and Lasoski’s first ever
Grandview win came in front of a
packed house.
“What a race with Donny Schatz,”
said the Higginsville, Missouri
racer following his second $10,000
payday of the season on the tour.
“We raced side by side and never
even came close to touching. It was
real exciting and I just hope you
folks enjoyed it.”
Schatz won the Dash which gave him
the pole spot and he quickly jumped
out front over Daryn Pittman.
Lasoski started fifth in the Dennis
Roth owned No. 83 and moved into the
runner-up spot with four laps
complete.
Schatz caught the rear of the field
on lap eight but a caution for Lucas
Wolfe, whose front win broke, opened
the track up for the Fargo, N.D.
racer.
Pittman’s third place run ended
with suspension problems on lap 12.
Schatz continued to set the pace
until he once again had to deal with
traffic on lap 20 which allowed
Lasoski to close in.
Lasoski drove around the outside of
the WoO points leader exiting the
fourth turn to lead lap 22.
While Lasoski and Schatz were out
front, the man putting on a passing
clinic was Joey Saldana, who stated
in the 20th spot.
Saldana raced his way into third
place with 25 laps complete and
appeared to be ready to track down
the leaders.
Schatz managed to get around
Lasoski on lap 34 but Lasoski pulled
alongside Schatz going down the
backstretch on the final lap and
emerged the winner in the photo
finish.
“He got caught in lapped traffic
and that’s how I was able to get him
and that’s how we lost the lead as
well,” said the winner. On that last
lap coming down the backstretch, I
had a 50/50 shot. I didn’t know
which way Pittman was gonna go. I
went across the bottom and set up
through the middle and I knew he
would get a run on me. You can race
him side by side and not have to
worry about him turning into you. It
was exciting.”
Schatz settled for second with
Saldana third, Jason Sides fourth
and Paul McMahan fifth for an all
Outlaw sweep in the top five.
Fred Rahmer started 14th and
finished sixth followed by Greg
Hodnett, Jason Solwold, Tim Shaffer
and Jeremy Campbell.
McMahan paced the 39-car field in
time trials with a lap of 11.831
seconds.
Heat races were won by Pittman,
Hodnett, Campbell and Zach Chappell
with the B-Main going to Rahmer.
The Keystone Cup Series moves to
the Big Diamond Raceway tonight with
a $5,000 to win 30-lap feature. Race
time is 7 p.m.
