Lucas Wolfe Sails To Big Diamond Victory

By Brad Vores May 25, 2007

MINERSVILLE
Lucas Wolfe finally put together a complete night Thursday night at Big Diamond Raceway.

The end result was the first win of the year for the Mechanicsburg driver.

Wolfe’s win came in night number two of the Dupont Tyvek Keystone Cup Sprint Series event at the Minersville oval and it came in front a huge crowd for the only scheduled appearance this season by the 410 Sprints.

Wolfe outgunned Keith Kauffman at the start of the 30-lap feature and then kept Fred Rahmer at bay before scoring the $5,000 payday aboard the Jim and Laura Allebach owned, BeerHill Gang No. 5W Maxim.

“We had a good starting spot tonight but we seem to go pretty good here and we did what we had to do,” said the Cumberland Valley High School graduate. “We have a pretty good track record here and it just feels good to get a win.”

It’s been a season of struggle for the young driver.

Two hard crashes at Williams Grove, the most recent during the Dash race of a World of Outlaws event have set the team back somewhat.

But when he’s been on track, he’s been consistently one of the fastest cars.

After getting the jump on Kauffman, Wolfe led until lap four when Jonathon Eriksen spun in turn four.

Rahmer got around Kauffman for the runner-up spot with six laps complete and it was a game of cat and mouse as the two frontrunners had to work heavy lapped traffic for the remainder of the event.

Wolfe held a four car length advantage when a red flag was thrown on lap 22 after third running Kauffman tangled with the lapped car of Neal Petock.

Wolfe knew he had the master of restarts behind him on the restart. He didn’t let it bother him.

“Obviously he (Fred ) is good everywhere he goes but we just did what we were doing and it worked out for us,” he stated.

Rahmer was never able to mount a challenge over the final eight laps as Wolfe raced away for the big win.

Rahmer, of Salfordville was second with Millerstown’s Todd Shaffer finishing third in the Gary and Patty Beam owned sprinter with Selinsgrove’s Mark Smith fourth in the J & M Motorsports sprinter.  Stevie Smith, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma was the only car to really do any passing on the dry slick surface finishing fifth after lining up 15th in the RAACE Foundation entry.

Completing the top 10 were Mike Erdley, Lance Dewease, TJ Stutts, Doug Esh and Brian Leppo.

Erdley set fast time during time trials with a lap of 14.569 seconds. There were 25 cars pitside.

Heats went to Craig Keel, Blane Heimbach and Stevie Smith.

The Keystone Cup continues tonight at Williams Grove Speedway with a 7:45 p.m. start. It then heads to Lincoln Speedway on Saturday,

Selinsgrove Speedway Sunday and winds up Monday afternoon at Port Royal Speedway.
