MECHANICSBURG
It took Mike Erdley a long time to win one feature at Williams
Grove Speedway.
He did that earlier this season in the tracks season opener.
Erdley backed that win up with a big win Friday night in the 30-lap
O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions event at the track.
Erdley joined World of Outlaws points leader Donny Schatz as the
only repeat winner this season at Williams Grove.
It took Erdley 15 laps to get out front and then had to work
through lapped traffic during the final 10 laps before securing his
second career win, which was worth $5,000.
“This year’s been up and down for us,” said the Elizabethtown racer
who drives for car owner Randy Lisi. “We started off real good but
then we made the tire change to the spec tire and we’ve been
struggling with that. But I’m not sure if we’re struggling as much
with the tire as we are having to start ninth in a heat race every
week. That makes it nearly impossible.”
Erdley used the All Star time trial inversion to his advantage
Friday.
He lined up alongside Kevin Nouse for the start of the A-Main and
then followed Nouse before making his move at the halfway mark in a
race that went caution-free.
“I was a little concerned when Kevin got the jump on me because
he’s a good racer and can get out front and set a good pace,” Erdley
said. “But I was surprised when I went by him so fast. My car was
really working good on the bottom tonight.”
Brian Leppo moved around Nouse for the runner-up spot with 19 laps
complete and quickly reeled in the leader.
Leppo appeared to have the strongest car working the outside of the
speedway but when the leaders came upon Chris Meleason, Erdley was
able to use his slower car as a pick on Leppo, who had some
difficultly getting around the Carlisle driver.
Erdley was able to get some momentum until Leppo finally got around
Meleason.
Leppo closed right back in on Erdley with three laps remaining, but
once again the leaders came upon a pack of slower traffic and Erdley
was able to keep the New Oxford racer behind for the win.
“In traffic, you don’t want to slow down to their pace and a couple
of times, I found that happening,” stated Erdley. “You have to shove
it up through there but I could hear somebody back there a few
times.”
Leppo finished a close second in the Floyd and Joyce Swope owned
machine with Thomasville’s Greg Hodnett third in the Jim and Sandy
Kline owned sprinter. Hodnett was the All Star winner Thursday at
the Port Royal Speedway.
Fourth went to Millerstown’s Todd Shaffer in the Gary and Patty
Beam owned sprinter who started 10th with Upperco, Md.’s Jeff
Shepard fifth in the John and PeeWee Zemaitis owned racer.
Completing the top 10 finishers were Doug Esh, Nouse, Brian
Montieth, Dale Blaney and Fred Rahmer.
Mechanicsburg’s Lucas Wolfe paced the 43-car field during time
trials with a lap of 16.590 seconds.
Heat races went to Shepard, Craig Keel, Niki Young and Shaffer. The
B-Main was won by Esh.
The All Stars Pennsylvania swing continues tonight at the Lincoln
Speedway.
PIT STOPS…The Barry Jackson owned Weikert Livestock sprinter driven
by Kenny Jacobs suffered a blown motor during warmups and was out
for the night…Blaney, Brian Paulus and Danny Smith were the only
three All Star regulars to make the starting lineup…The Pennsylvania
Posse is 18-0 versus the All Stars at Williams Grove…Ryan Bohlke’s
axle broke during time trials sending his car into the wall. He
suffered some back pain but was out for the evening…
