Brian Montieth lived up to his nickname Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.

Nicknamed “The Edge,” Montieth set a blistering pace around Williams Grove, threading lapped traffic lap after lap and keeping Chad Layton behind the entire distance as he captured his first 25-lap 410 Sprint car feature win of the season at the Monroe Township oval.

Montieth had the fans on the edge of their seats a few times weaving through the back markers late in the race but managed to become the 10th different winner at the track this season.

It was the second season win for the team owned by Jerry Parrish. Montieth won at Lincoln Speedway two weeks ago.

“It wasn’t how fast you got around here it was how fast you got through lapped traffic tonight,” the Phoenixville racer said following his second career Williams Grove victory. “I think the throttle spring came off because we were running wide open and I had no choice but to race through lapped traffic the way I did. You can’t hesitate or else you aren’t going to win.”

Bob Bennett spun on the first lap causing a melee in turn two that saw Craig Keel get upside down.

After relining the field, Montieth started sixth as Dillsburg’s Scott Geesey set the pace during the first four laps.

Montieth raced his way into second on lap three and blasted around the outside of Geesey in turn two to lead the fifth lap.

Doug Esh’s miserable season continued when he crashed into the front stretch wall on lap seven  to bring out a caution.

Chad Layton was second on the restart but was unable to challenge Montieth until they caught a big pack of cars at the rear on lap 15.

Montieth nearly crashed when he tried to lap Chris Meleason off the second turn but was able to keep the car out of the fence as Layton closed right in on his bumper.
Lance Dewease was moving through the field late, taking third from Lucas Wolfe on lap 19.

Montieth’s race winning move came during the 22nd lap when he threaded the lapped cars of Steve Clabaugh and Josh Wells coming off turn four and was able to open some distance over Layton.

Layton lost the runner-up spot to Dewease on lap 23 but Montieth had checked out and drove to the win in the Auto Locator, Premier Auto Works No. 21.

“The were a lot of cars bunched up there in front of us and I knew Chad was back there and I knew I had to get through them as fast as I could,” he added.
Parrish was thrilled with his drivers’ winning performance.

“He seems to amaze me every time he gets behind the wheel,” his car owner said. “He pulled that move there with a few laps to go around those two cars and I don’t think you could have even walked between them. He just made the right moves at the right time.”

Dewease, of Fayetteville had his best finish in a few weeks with a runner-up finish in the Pete Postupack owned machine with Layton, of Harrisburg third in the family-owned entry.
Wolfe, of Mechanicsburg finished fourth in the Jim and Laura Allebach sprinter with Greg Hodnett, of Thomasville fifth in Jim and Sandy Kline’s machine. Hodnett originally started 18th.

Completing the top 10 were Brian Leppo, Don Kreitz, Jr., Mike Erdley, Kevin Nouse and Fred Rahmer.

Chad Criswell scored a career first 20-lap 358 Sprint car win with a lap 19 pass on young Gerard McIntyre, Jr..

Dale Hammaker, Pat Cannon and Dave Calaman were the top five finishers.

Sprint car heats were won by Steve Clabaugh, Rich Eichelberger and Layton. Erdley won the consolation for the 31-car field.

Tim Higgins, Chad Myers, McIntyre, Jr. and Calaman won 358 sprint heats. The consolations were won by Kevin Nagy and Mike Walter. There were 31 cars.
