BEDFORD
There is a reason that Keith Kauffman enjoys racing at Bedford Speedway.

He is the track’s all time leading Sprint car feature winner and the Mifflintown veteran added another win to that record as he wired the field to win the first ever Pennsylvania Speedweek event at the track.

Bedford hosted night two of the 17th annual Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Speedweek series on Sunday night and Kauffman used luck of the draw then the bad luck of two competitors start on the pole for the 30-lap A Main.

He grabbed the lead on the start and never looked back in taking his third overall win of the season in Dave Middleswarth’s Middleswarth Potato Chips No. 7 sprinter. It was his also sixth career Speedweek win.

“We had a good starting spot and that meant the difference tonight,” the Man from Mifflintown stated after earning $5,000 for the win. “It was a good race track and we always like coming back to Bedford.”

Stevie Smith chased Kauffman the entire distance but was unable to mount a serious challenge on the one lane speedway.  Smith closed on Kauffman several times and appeared to be ready to challenge but Kauffman would pull away each time.

Brian Leppo brought out the first caution of the race on lap five when the brake bleeder was knocked off and he lost all of his brake fluid. Leppo set a new one lap track record in time trials but failed to transfer through his heat race and had to start ninth. He drew the zero pill for feature inversion.

The only other caution came out on lap 22 for fluid on the track but Kauffman was the man to beat on this night as he took the popular win.
“We had a great race tonight,” said the 1996 Speedweek champion. “The guys stayed up all night putting a brand new car together and it really paid off tonight. It was easy to drive.”

Greg Hodnett, of Thomasville took the third spot on lap 23 but could not close on the leaders.

Millerstown’s Todd Shaffer finished fourth ahead of Mechanicsburg’s Lucas Wolfe, the only car to really do any passing on the track. Wolfe set second quick time but dropped from his heat race and had to start 10th in the starting lineup.

Mike Wagner finished in the sixth spot over TJ Stuttws, Lance Dewease, Kevin Nouse and Chad Layton.

Leppo’s one lap time was 16.647 seconds.

Heats were won by Alan Cole, Niki Young and Cliff Brian. There were 24 cars pitside so no consolation was needed.

Following the Bedford event, Hodnett continues to lead the Speedweek points with 308 total points. Wolfe (276), Stevie Smith (275), Kauffman (229) and Esh (215) are the top five. Leppo (202), Layton (187), Young (185), Shaffer (185) and Stutts (176) are the top 10 after two events.

Pennsylvania Speedweek will resume Tuesday night with a date at the Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville.
