Donny Schatz makes it look easy.

While his competition circled the top of Williams Grove Speedway in last night’s first night of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals 25-lap feature, Schatz picked off one by one over the final 15 laps of the event and then held off Danny Lasoski over the final few laps for the win.

Schatz’s win in the World of Outlaw sanctioned event was his 12th of the year on the tour and his 12th career win at Williams Grove.

“The last time we were here in Victory lane, Ricky Warner was in second,” said the Fargo, N.D. racer of the Carlisle area crew chief who now works for Tony Stewart Racing, the rumored new owner of the Schatz Motorsports team. “Right now, he’s behind us and that’s awesome. Shane and Dave are from right down the road in Hanover so it’s the Pennsylvania Posse working for the World of Outlaws.”

Schatz started fifth in the 24-car field but never really made any noise until lap 10 when he found the bottom groove to his liking and advanced back into the top five after dropping out of it during the early laps.

Jason Sides led the early going over Jeff Shepard as Schatz took fifth on the 10th lap then moved by Danny Lasoski for fourth place two laps later.

Schatz then moved Brian Montieth back to fourth spot with  a lap 13 pass and a lap later, drove under Shepard for the runner-up spot.

It took the defending WoO champion only three more laps to make the winning pass on Sides with a move off the second turn.

“Everybody kinda got spread out on the top there and I was lucky to find the bottom before anybody else did,” he said after his third Williams Grove win of the year, which paid $5,000. “We may not have had the best car at the end but we made it 25 laps and it should put us pretty good for tomorrow night and Saturday.”

Schatz is enjoying a profitable week for his sprint car team with a $50,000 payday in last week’s Kings Royal then winning Wednesday night’s $30,000 Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway. He would like to add Saturday’s $20,000 top prize to his bank account.

Lasoski came on strong during the waning laps in the Dennis Roth owned JEI Chassis for second place ahead of Sides, Shepard and Joey Saldana.

Montieth was sixth over Daryn Pittman, Tim Shaffer, Paul McMahan and Greg Hodnett.

Lance Dewease was running inside the top five on the final lap when his driveline broke and sent him to the pits.

Schatz set fast time over the 52-car field during time trials with a lap of 17.084 seconds.

Heats were won by Sides, Tim Shaffer, Montieth and Lance Dewease. Jason Martin won the C-Main, TJ Stutts won the B-Main and Sides topped the Dash.
