BECHTELSVILLE
Todd Shaffer finally conquered Grandview Speedway.
The Millerstown driver had never won at the Bechtelsville oval
until Tuesday night when he piloted the Gary and Patty Beam-owned
sprinter to the victory in the 35-lap Cindy Rowe Auto Glass
Pennsylvania Speedweek feature event.
Shaffer started fourth on the grid and raced down leader Chad
Layton on the 11th lap to take the top spot.
Once Shaffer got out front, he set sail around the bullring for his
first ever win at the track. The win was his fifth career
Pennsylvania Speedweek win as well.
“Twenty-two years and I’ve led a lot of laps here years ago and
even up to one lap to go and we either had mechanical problems or
crashed so I just quit coming here because of the bad luck,” said
the driver of the Village Square Plaza, J & M Racing & Collectibles,
McCoy Brothers General Contractors, Don Ott Racing Engines No. 88
JEI Chassis. “I’m sure we won’t miss another one.”
Once Shaffer found the right groove, he showed his dominance after
following early leaders Layton and Doug Esh.
Layton led the first five laps before Esh took the top spot on the
sixth circuit.
His lead was short-lived as Layton went back out front a lap later
only to have Shaffer blast around the outside to lead the 11th lap.
Two laps later, Esh’s top five ride ended upside down in the third
turn.
Lucas Wolfe started fifth and moved by Layton for the runner-up
spot on lap 28 but could not track down the leader.
Fred Rahmer started 15th and worked his way into the sixth spot
when he made contact with the inside turn four tires, resulting in a
flat front tire. He spun the car and was finished for the night
after bringing out the yellow with three laps remaining.
But over the final three laps, it was all Shaffer for the $5,000
payday, his second overall this season.
Shaffer praised the Grandview track crew for a good race track.
“Man, what a race track,” Shaffer said to the capacity crowd for
the third night of the Speedweek series. “You could run the bottom,
you could run the top. And those last three laps, I ran right
through the middle.”
Shaffer didn’t mind the late race yellow flag that bunched the
field and put Wolfe within striking distance.
“It didn’t really matter because when you are out front and you
know you are in front because you started there, then you want an
open track,” he added. “But my guys had this car real good tonight
and wherever the lapped cars went, I could go the other way. It
gives you a chance to take a breather and calm down and concentrate
on keeping the car straight.”
Wolfe, of Mechanicsburg was second ahead of Fayetteville’s Lance
Dewease, Thomasville’s Greg Hodnett who started 12th and
Harrisburg’s Layton.
Completing the top 10 were Stevie Smith, Kevin Nouse, Brian
Montieth, Alan Krimes and Brian Leppo.
Dewease paced the 31-car field during time trials with a lap of
12.480 seconds.
Heat races were won by Hodnett, Nouse, Billy Pauch and Rahmer. The
B-Main was won by Keith Kauffman.
After the third night of Speedweek, Hodnett continues to lead the
Speedweek points with 438 points. Wolfe is second with 429 followed
by Stevie Smith with 397, Shaffer with 358 and Keith Kauffman with
323. The top 10 are Layton (316), Dewease (315), Leppo (302), Nouse
(267) and Doug Esh (259).
