Sean Michael Claims Selinsgrove Victory/Wolfe Wins Speedweek Title

By Brad Vores July 9, 2007

SELINSGROVE
Sean Michael is glad he answered a call on his cell phone one Saturday morning a few months ago.

That call was from Jim Nace.

Nace wanted to see if Michael wanted to drive his No. 6 sprint car in select racing events throughout the area this season.

Michael accepted the ride after over a two-year layoff and Sunday night, Michael was the upset winner of the final night of the 17th annual Cindy Rowe Auto Glass Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek event at Selinsgrove Speedway.

Michael led the entire distance in the finale to put the Nace-owned sprint car back into a familiar place at the Snyder County facility. It was his first ever 410 Sprint car win at Selinsgrove as well.

While Michael was getting the job done up front, Mechanicsburg’s Lucas Wolfe drove a masterful race to finish third and clinch his first ever Pennsylvania Speedweek championship.

Wolfe’s third place finish coupled with Greg Hodnett’s seventh place finish gave Wolfe and the Jim and Laura Allebach-owned team the title by eight points. Wolfe didn’t win a race all week long but put together six top five finishes in seven starts to take the $2,000 championship.

“I was mowing my grass one Saturday morning, and I hadn’t race in two and a half years and my cell phone rang,” said Michael, who now lives in Coplay. “I didn’t know who it was and I normally don’t answer it and it was Jim Nace asking me if I was interested in the ride. It wasn’t an every week ride, just select shows and I said sure and here we are. I can’t thank Jim Nace enough for this opportunity.”

Michael competed in only three Speedweek shows, finished 14th in overall points and never finished outside the top five in the three starts. He was fourth at Williams Grove on Friday and second at Port Royal on Saturday.

Michael started fourth in last night’s 30-lap event but wasted no time in driving to the front, blasting by front row starters Jeff Shepard and Brian Leppo on lap one and never looking back in the Nace Bus Service, Fast Tees, Charlie Garrett powered sprinter.

Two early race yellows kept the field close but each time Michael would pull away.

Stevie Smith started fifth and raced his way by Shepard for the runner-up spot on lap 23 and quickly closed in on Michael.

Smith appeared poised to make a pass on Michael when Chad Layton’s stopped car brought out a yellow flag on the 26th lap.

Michael was able to keep Smith behind and despite a lap 29 red flag for fuel, it was all Michael for the $5,000 win in his second career Pennsylvania Speedweek win. He was the fifth different winner in the seven Speedweek races.

“I saw Shepard left the bottom open and I got between Esh and Leppo off turn four and it stuck and that’s what won the race for us tonight,” Michael stated. “I didn’t know who was in second but I was just looking forward and trying not to make any mistakes.”

Smith, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma finished second with Wolfe finishing third over Esh, of Lancaster and Upperco, Maryland’s Shepard.
Fred Rahmer was sixth over Hodnett, Lance Dewease, Todd Shaffer and Blane Heimbach.

Wolfe finished the week with 968 points compared to Hodnett’s 960. Smith was third in final points with 916, Dewease fourth with 795 and Keith Kauffman fifth with 704.

Completing the top 10 in Speedweek points were Rahmer (693), Shaffer (668), Layton (605), TJ Stutts (594) and Leppo (577).
Shepard set fast time over the 28-car field with a lap of 17.023 seconds.

Heat races were won by Rahmer, Hodnett and Wolfe with Mike Walter winning the B-Main.
