ABBOTTSTOWN
Stevie Smith knew he had to get to the front fast.
Lining up third in Wednesday night’s John Gleim Excavating 55th
Anniversary 30-lap 410 Sprint car feature at Lincoln Speedway, the
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver drove by front row starters TJ Stutts and
Jim Siegel on lap one and never looked back as he wired the field for
the $5,500 win.
The race was a make-up event that was originally rained out in May.
While Smith stayed up front the entire race, good battles throughout
the top 10 during the race kept it interesting as Lucas Wolfe and Cris
Eash exchanged the runner-up spot numerous times during the event.
Smith’s win was his 20th career in the Pigeon Hills and second at the
track this season in the Race Against the Abuse of Children Everywhere
No. 19 JEI Chassis.
“I never thought there would be two,” Smith said after his second win
this season, after going winless for many seasons at the track. “We come
in here to try and win races and I’m just as excited to win as if it was
my first win. We love to win races but it’s been a difficult task for
our team here and hopefully we are getting on the right track.”
Eash ran second behind Smith until Wolfe, who started eighth, took the
second spot with ten laps complete.
Eash went back by Wolfe two laps later with Wolfe, of Mechanicsburg,
driving back around Eash on the 15th lap.
With Smith ahead by five car lengths, Eash went back around Wolfe on
lap 20 just before a yellow flag for Brian Leppo and Steve Clabaugh, who
tangled in turn one.
Fred Rahmer, who started seventh, got b y Wolfe for third place on lap
21 but could not get around Eash for the runner-up spot.
Eash, of Hanover, closed in on Smith over the final three laps but was
unable to make a bid for the win.
“Everything felt pretty good tonight and I just tried to hold that
line,” said Smith, a four-time winner this season. “I wasn’t really sure
where to run and I needed someone to signal me. I didn’t want to get off
that bottom. If I would have started 10th, it would have been a whole
different story. We just aren’t going to run up there and drive by these
guys. Everyone is really fast and starting position is the key.”
Eash held on for his best finish since taking over the driving duties
in his brother Darren’s sprinter with a well-earned runner-up finish.
Rahmer, of Salfordville was third over Fayetteville’s Lance Dewease up
from 13th and 11th starting Alan Krimes of Denver.
Greg Hodnett, Doug Esh, Wolfe, Niki Young and Jeff Busby were the top
10 finishers.
Biglerville’s Nat Tuckey won for the 11th time in thundercar action
over Mike Walls, Ronnie Thomas, Mike Slaybaugh and Craig Wagaman.
Wolfe paced the 28-car field in time trials with a lap of 13.544
seconds.
Heats were won by Josh Wells, Krimes and Busby with Cory Haas winning
the B-Main.
PIT STOPS…Lincoln returns to action Saturday night with the 358 Sprints,
All American Outlaws and thundercars…Todd Shaffer finished second in the
B-Main but failed to report to the scales following the race and was
disqualified…Aaron Ott got upside down during his heat race after his
car wheelied on the front stretch. Ott has some serious hang time in the
spectacular crash…
