MECHANCISBURG
Kevin Nouse and Mark Smith picked up much needed wins in Friday night’s Twin 20’s at Williams Grove Speedway.

Nouse, of Lewisberry turned in a fine performance to win the first feature after starting in ninth spot. It was his second win this year at the track and fifth overall in Bryan Golden’s No. 12 sprinter.

Smith started fourth in the second feature and dominated for his third Grove win and sixth this season in the Mark Coldren owned No. 07 sprinter.

The first feature was the best of the night as Tommy Beavers gave way to Chad Layton on lap eight.

Layton and Nouse raced in heavy lapped traffic on lap 17 when a car got sideways in front of them. Lucas Wolfe and Todd Shaffer had joined in the battle with fifth place Lance Dewease spinning to avoid the stopped car of Brian Montieth.

Nouse actually led lap 17 and then held the point on the restart as Layton tried a slider in turn two. It failed, as Layton turned sideways then rolled the Pete Postupack sprinter on its side.

Shaffer moved into second and also tried a slider on Nouse but could not make the pass work as Nouse drove away from the field over the final laps for the win.

‘I haven’t led here since the night I won and depending who you ask, that was a fluke,” he said. “Tonight we drove from ninth so this wasn’t a fluke.”

Shaffer, Wolfe, Fred Rahmer and Smith were the top five with 22nd starting Greg Hodnett sixth over Mike Erdley, Chris Meleason, Doug Esh and Clark Simonton.

The top eight finishers from the first feature were inverted for the second 20 lapper as Smith watched Meleason and Erdley trade slide jobs for the first few laps with Erdley taking the lead on lap three.

Smith made his move on a lap eight restart and drove away as the remainder of the race went nonstop.

“I knew I was better than Mike and I decided I better go for it on the restart,” Smith stated. “This is the only motor we have so I am hoping it will last me the rest of the year.”

Shaffer finished second and will open a healthy lead in the Grove point standings as Jeff Shepard, who second going into the night had mechanical woes and did not qualify and Rahmer was involved in a first lap crash with Nouse in the second race and was paid for 23rd.

Erdley, Hodnett and Wolfe were the top five with Brian Leppo, Esh, Meleason, Dewease and Layton the top 10 finishers.

Heats for the 32 cars were won by Steve Buckwalter, Dewease, Simonton and Alan Krimes with Smith winning the consolation.

Williams Grove returns to action Sunday with 410 Sprints, Super Sportsman and 358 Sprints at 7pm.
