MECHANICSBURG
Week after week Lucas Wolfe has been one of the fastest cars on the track at Williams Grove Speedway.

But the Mechanicsburg driver has been unable to put together a complete run for a win.

Wolfe ended his slump Sunday night as he drove to the win in the 25-lap 410 Sprint car feature at the track.

Wolfe’s win was overshadowed  by a violent crash involving Mechanicsburg’s Bill Kimmel on the 24th lap of the feature event.

Kimmel crashed his No. 47 sprint hard in turn three. Advanced Life Support and Life Lion from Penn State’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center were called to speedway grounds to assist in efforts. Kimmel was never transported but was pronounced dead at Harrisburg Hospital just before midnight. He was 27  years old.

Wolfe started 10th in the field and wasted no time in driving to the front.

With Michael Carber setting the pace, Wolfe moved into fourth spot with just three laps complete and then drove by Clark Simonton for third place on lap six.

The event’s first yellow appeared on lap six when Steve Buckwalter spun collecting track points leader Todd Shaffer. Shaffer rejoined and finished 11th.  Shaffer lost 60 points to Fred Rahmer in the standings.

Wolfe drove into the runner-up spot on lap eight bringing Lance Dewease with him in third.

The two tried to reel in Carber as the leaders began to catch the rear of the field.

Wolfe inched closer and closer to Carber and when the young Pipersville driver had trouble putting Bob Howard a lap down, Wolfe drove under him for the lead in turn three to lead lap 20.

Dewease got around Carber on lap 21 as the top five cars raced close together when Kimmel’s violent crash occurred in turn three.

Carber, who had faded to fourth spot and sixth running Jeff Shepard were both caught up in the incident with Kimmel.

Wolfe easily won a last lap shootout for the win, his fourth overall in 410 sprint racing aboard the Jim and Laura Allebach owned, Rick’s Auto Body, BeerHill Gang sponsored No. 5W sprinter.

“Michael was going pretty good and it would have been tough to pass him on an open track,” said Wolfe, who also has four 360 sprint car wins this season. “I needed to take advantage in lapped traffic and he got stuck behind someone and that was what I needed to make a move. Sometimes lapped traffic works for you. Sometimes it doesn’t.”

Dewease, of Fayetteville finished second with Thomasville’s Greg Hodnett third after starting 12th. Lancaster’s Doug Esh was fourth over Salfordville’s Fred Rahmer.

Sixth through 10th were Mark Smith, Rich Eichelberger, Simonton, Craig Keel and 24th starting Chad Layton.

Rick Lafferty, Dewease and Carber won heats for the 30 410 Sprints. Mike Erdley won the consolation.

The Super Sportsman and 358 Sprint car features were not complete by presstime.
